We’ve seen some pretty unusual (read: horrible) nail trends in recent years.
Back in 2018, we were treated to styles that included strands of ‘Rapunzel’ hair, feet and a miniature doll of Kim Kardashian twerking. Not to be outshone, 2019 gave us ears that ooze pus (watch the video at your own risk) and bizarre nails with a tobacco pipe attached.
Many of these strange manicures were courtesy of Nail Sunny, a salon in Beverley Hills, known for its kooky designs – but the brand may have taken things a step too far this time, if public reaction is anything to go by.
Nail Sunny shared a video of the manicure on its Instagram page earlier this week, featuring green blobs on one hand (to resemble the virus) and depictions of what appears to be Asian people’s faces on the other hand.
The post has since racked up over 80,000 views and nearly 3,000 likes, while a previous post of the same design has over 13,000 likes.
‘Why would you do this,’ asked one person, while another former fan asked ‘who thought this would be a good idea to post’.
‘This is done in really bad taste and super insensitive,’ said someone else.
One follower simply replied with ‘unfollowing’, while another wrote ‘yeah, this ain’t it’.
‘That’s racist,’ commented one person.
Others pointed out the fact the virus has resulted in multiple deaths, saying ‘people are really dying’.
So far, over 700 deaths have been reported as a result of people contracting the Coronavirus, with the outbreak believed to have happened in Wuhan, China.
However, not everyone hated the look.
‘The nails look good, why yall [you all] hating,’ commented one person.
This isn’t the first time the nail brand has showcased a controversial style; a few years ago, the Russian nail technicians received backlash for trapping live ants inside nails.
‘There is a difference between stepping on them unintentionally and shoving them in finger nails. It doesn’t even look cool,’ commented one unimpressed Instagrammer at the time.
What do you think of the salon’s latest creation?
